Keyword Ideas for your Website to help Increase your Website Ranking
Keywords are the most important part of your website. They tell search engines and customers what your website is about and this is the first place to start when writing content for your site. Content is not just the paragraphs of text, there are many other places that keywords can be used to increase your website ranking.- Domain Name
- Title of your page
- Headings
- Web page content
- Images
Keyword analysis - finding keywords to suit what your business is about that visitors will search for to find you
So the first thing you really need to look at is understanding your target market and what they will be typing in to search engines (Google, Yahoo etc) to find you. These are the keywords you will want to use. Make sure these words accurately depict what your site is about. These words will play a major roll in driving more traffic to your website and it's not a matter of just putting them in there once or twice, they need to be used throughout your content but make sure it is in a natural way otherwise it can be quite off putting when you're just reading a lot of repeated words.
A great tool to find the best words to use is www.adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Have a look at your competition for Keyword Ideas
If your struggling to find keyword ideas have a look at your competitor's website and the keywords they have used for ideas.
Keywords in your domain name
Don't forget your domain name. If you can have good keywords here it helps with search engines but it can also have a positive impact when people see a domain name that is exactly what they are searching for.
Keywords in the name of your web page
The name of each page of your website has a title to describe what the page is about. For example, ours looks like this keyword-ideas-for-your-website-to-increase-your-website-ranking.html which you can see in the browser bar at the top of the page.
This is a great way for search engines see what your page is about but as it also shows in the search engine results your potential visitors will see this and if it is exactly what they are looking for then they are more likely to click on your website link. A descriptive, keyword rich sentence, no more then 70 characters will be perfect.
Keyword in your headings are 'worth' more to search engines
If you really want to improve your website you're going to have a lot of content. For a potential client to view your website and it has mass amounts of information with not many headings they will just not have time to read through it all to find what they are looking for and they will move on. It is very important to break the information up with headings. This will give your visitors an idea of what your website is about.
These headings are 'worth' more with search engines so when writing headings make sure you use keywords here.
Keywords in your web page content - how to use them and what you can write about
Search engines favour large sites that are targeted to a specific topic. For example, let's say you sell fruit trees and you're thinking 'There is only so much I can write about fruit trees.' Well… there is a heap of information you can put on your website! You can write articles about fertilizers, disease, soils, planting distances, companion plants, frost, rainfall, irrigation etc.
When writing you want to place your keyword phrases into the content in a natural way making sure you mention them several times with slight tweaks or variation. For example 'Buy fruit trees,' 'buying fruit trees,' 'fruit trees for sale,' 'fruit trees online.' What you don't want to do is overdo your keywords where it sounds unnatural and sales pitchy. Also Google will penalize you if you go overboard by ‘keyword stuffing.’ Try to aim for 3 - 6 good keyword phrases per page just with slight variances to the phrases. For each page make sure those key phrases are relevant to the topic of that page.
You should use your keywords at least once if not a few times in your first paragraph of content, the same again for your last paragraph and a few more times in the body of your content.
A good habit to get into is writing an article a month focusing on using your keywords. This is a good way of adding content to your website. Another idea is to write an article about a problem and how it can be fixed using your product. It is what a lot of people search for online. For example 'fruit tree diseases.' So from writing an article on Fruit Tree Diseases (which can be on many different fruit trees) your website comes up with information on how to fix the problem and in the article you can have products to purchase which can also lead into an article on Preventative Maintenance where you can sell other products from there.
Location keywords
Try to use your local area through out the content on your website not the major city as often when people are searching for goods and services they will type the location at the end of the search term.
Keyword text hidden in your images
Search Engines cannot see your images but can read the text of your images so it’s a good idea to name each image to what it actually is. For example, instead of calling it ‘image1’ call it ‘orange-tree-for-purchase.jpg’ This is just a small optimization but it will help your website ranking because search engines will see that your not ‘keyword stuffing’ and that your serious about improving your ranking.
Places to look to find the keywords you need for your website
Type in 2 of your keyword phrases or keywords to see which one is the better one to use
Type in a keyword phrase or keywords to see what is most searched for in Google - the number one search engine
Type in your keyword phrase or keyword and click search to see the top searches related to your keywords.
Type in a keyword that you want to use i.e. keyword followed by an 'a' - 'keyword a' and from the drop down menu this will bring up what people have searched for following the word keyword a... like 'keyword analysis', then move on the 'keyword b' and 'keyword c' etc.
How do I know I'm using the right keywords?
The honest answer is time and testing. To write all the content, dust off your hands and say 'that's it!' is not the best attitude to have. People often think it will look after itself but like everything in life we need to look after it. Ideally I'd love you to be enthusiastic and involved in your website. This is what makes the difference! I know life can be crazy and there are other priorities but if you can find as little as a few hours a month to have a look at your Google Analytics account and see what search terms people have used to find your website and then edit your content or write more this will make a difference.
Other ideas to think about for website content ideas
Make it clear on your website what you do and the clients you've worked with. Use their logo's on your website. This will give people an idea of how much you charge and will filter out people either wanting jobs that are way too small or way to large and will save you a lot of time when they call up on the phone asking lots of different questions.
If you have your address on every page you have more of a chance of showing up in the search results. Also having your phone number on every page makes it easy for customers to contact you.
Google Analytics and improving your ratings through keywords
View this often to see what people are typing in to get to your website and from those words put them in your website.
